Commercial Electric Fans

Commercial electric fans are built to move large amounts of air in spaces where standard household fans fall short. They run on standard or high-voltage power and are designed to operate for long hours without breaking down.

Hunter has been building fans since 1886. This collection covers everything from 12-inch workstation fans to 24-foot HVLS ceiling fans, all tested and certified for commercial and industrial use.

How to Choose a Commercial Electric Fan

Not every commercial electric fan works for every space. The right fan depends on the size of the space, how the space is used, and what you need the fan to do. These are the main factors to look at before you buy.

CFM

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It measures how much air a fan moves in one minute. A higher CFM means more airflow.

Air movement also has a direct cooling effect on people, even without changing the actual temperature in the room. Jan Fan industrial circulators produce enough air velocity to create a perceived temperature drop of up to 10.3 degrees Fahrenheit. For workers in a hot facility, that is a real difference without adding HVAC load.

CFM ratings for Jan Fan air circulators are tested under the AMCA 230-23 standard. AMCA testing means the airflow numbers are independently verified, not manufacturer estimates.

Fan Size

Bigger fans move more air and cover more space. A 36-inch drum fan works well in a garage or small shop. A 42-inch drum fan handles a loading dock or mid-size warehouse. For open-span buildings like barns or factories with high ceilings, HVLS ceiling fans cover up to 22,500 square feet per unit while running at under 55 decibels.

XP HVLS

The XP is a versatile choice for various commercial environments. Whether it's in boutiques, workshops, or fitness centers, the XP HVLS easily adapts to different settings. Its compact size combined with powerful performance ensures effective air circulation. This model is the best choice for businesses seeking a balance between space constraints and the need for quality air circulation.

Voltage

Most commercial electric fans run on 120-volt power, which is standard in most buildings. Some heavy-duty HVLS models require 200-240V or 380-480V. Before ordering, check your available power supply.

The Hunter XP is the only HVLS fan in this lineup designed exclusively for standard 120-volt power. No electrical upgrade required. It covers up to 4,900 square feet per unit using the same circuit as a standard plug. The Trak Edge also supports 120V and offers a 240V option for facilities that prefer it.

Portable vs. Fixed

Portable fans on stands or wheels are easy to move between spaces or redirect as needed. Fixed fans mounted to walls or ceilings stay in one position but free up floor space and reduce trip hazards. Facilities with defined work zones often use a mix of both.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

Indoor fans are not built to handle rain, humidity, or direct sun exposure. If the fan will be used outdoors or in a space that gets wet, you need an outdoor-rated or wet-rated model.

Hunter fans rated for covered outdoor usage include:

  • HAC Oscillating Outdoor Pedestal Fan (outdoor rated)
  • Jan Fan Drum Fan (outdoor rated)
  • Trak Edge ceiling fan (UL 507 Wet Rated)

Noise Level

Commercial fans move a lot of air and some of them are loud. For spaces where workers need to communicate, look for fans with lower decibel ratings. All Hunter HVLS ceiling fans run at under 55 decibels at max speed, which is roughly the volume of a quiet conversation. The Jan Fan Workstation Fan runs as low as 49 decibels.

Building Code Compliance

In most commercial and industrial buildings with sprinkler systems, the fans you install need to meet NFPA standards. Hunter ECO, Titan, and XP HVLS fans are NFPA 13 and NFPA 72 compliant, which covers fire sprinkler and fire alarm system requirements.

Types of Commercial Electric Fans

Workstation Fans

Workstation fans are small, portable fans built for individual stations, tool benches, break rooms, and tight spaces. They mount on a floor stand, tabletop, or wall bracket and direct airflow at a single person or work area. The Jan Fan Workstation Fan is available in 12-inch and 18-inch sizes, runs on 120V, and includes a yoke mount in the box.

Pedestal Fans

Pedestal fans mount on an adjustable-height pole with a weighted base. They are easy to position at different heights and work well in gyms, machine shops, retail spaces, and open work areas. Hunter pedestal fans are available in 24 and 30-inch sizes. The HAC Oscillating Outdoor Pedestal Fan has an optional misting kit or wall mount accessory and is built for covered outdoor use. The Jan Fan Industrial Air Circulator is available in 20, 24, and 30-inch sizes and supports seven mounting configurations from a single unit including pedestal, mobile pedestal, wall/ceiling, adapter, I-beam, C-channel, and articulating arm.

Wall-Mount Fans

Wall-mount fans attach directly to the wall, which keeps them out of the way of forklifts, foot traffic, and machinery. They work well in spaces where floor space is limited or ceiling mounting is not possible. The HAC Orbital Wall Fan includes a remote and delivers 1,857 CFM from a 20-inch blade in a compact wall-mount housing.

Drum Fans

Drum fans have a round barrel-shaped housing and sit on a wheeled frame that tilts for directional airflow. They are portable, powerful, and widely used in warehouses, construction sites, garages, and loading docks. Hunter drum fans are available in 36-inch and 42-inch sizes under both the HAC and Jan Fan lines. The Jan Fan Drum Fan is outdoor rated and delivers up to 9,965 CFM from the 42-inch model.

HVLS Ceiling Fans

HVLS stands for high volume, low speed. These fans have blade spans from 7 to 24 feet and turn slowly to push large columns of air toward the floor. They cover up to 22,500 square feet per unit and run at under 55 decibels, quiet enough for occupied spaces. Hunter ECO, Titan, and XP HVLS fans are NFPA 13 and NFPA 72 compliant.

Hunter HVLS fans also connect to building management systems through BACnet MS/TP, BACnet IP, and Modbus RTU protocols using a gateway accessory. This allows facility managers to schedule fans, monitor performance, and integrate airflow control with HVAC from a single system.
